How long is it until iPhone will start telling me to update IOS?

So if a new update is out, how long will it be until you get the little "1" on the settings icon telling you there's an update?

Only asking as I normally find out about the updates the day there out and manually search and update before the phone even tells me. I just wondered if you don't do it manually when will it tell you? Is it normally a week or something? Don't think it's too long but can't remember?
